MEXICO

Mexico is a country bordering south of the United States of America, with Belize and Guatemala to the southeast. It is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Mexico is rich in natural resources, like oil, silver, copper, and agricultural products and known for its spicy Mexican food

The landscape of Mexico is diverse with high mountains, deep canyons, deserts and rain forest jungles with scattered historical ruins throughout the country. This country has a rich ancient history of complex society of Indian people from the distant past before the Spaniards came and became a part of the country's population. Several Aztec and Mayan pyramids and ruins are still preserved today. When planning to travel and visit other countries that you are not familiar with, it is good to learn a few things in addition to the attractions and activities that the country has to offer to make your visit just great. Why not learn a little of their culture and the Dos and Don'ts to help you understand whats acceptable and whats not to help you fit in the community.

 

Here is a small list below which should make interesting reading. Feast your eyes as well on the slide show gallery of photos depicting interesting places to look out for on your visit to Mexico. Enjoy!

  • Do shake hands upon meeting someone. Hugs and back slaps are shared among friends

  • Do learn a few Spanish phrases. Say salud when someone sneezes, to not do so is considered rude

  • Do take off sunglasses and hats when entering a church

  • Do bring sweets or flowers for your host 

  • Do rest your wrists on the edge of the table when dining

  • Do leave a little food on your plate when done and put knife and fork across plate with the prongs faced down and the handles to the right

  • Do tip with 10-20% of service charge

  • Do know that only men are allowed to give a toast in Mexican culture

  • Do open a gift upon receipt

  • Do expect to answer questions on family, background, and life interests when building business relationships 

  • Do demonstrate trust, sincerity, integrity

   to build relationships

  • Do arrange business meetings 2 weeks in advance and reconfirm 1 week before

  • Do not use the words no or I don't know. It is considered a betrayal, unsupportive or rude

  • Do not give marigold or red flowers as gifts they symbolize death and negativity

  • Do not arrive less than 30 mins before a dinner invitation; early is inappropriate

  • Do not sit down until you are invited to and told where to sit

  • Do not begin eating until the hostess starts 

  • Do not be angry when business decisions and negotiations take long

  • Do not give your best offer first. Negotiations will include haggling
