The Arabian nation of United Arab Emirates is located along the Persian Gulf in the Middle East. It is made up of a federation of seven (7) emirates. The country borders Saudi Arabia and Oman. Most of the Emirates is desert land and along with the gulf coast and mountains it makes a natural beautiful sight.

The Emirates have a rich history from the Persian to European dwellers. The olden days wealth of pearl diving to the modern day oil discovery that contribute to the development of a world re-known destination that continues to attract expats and tourists alike.

  • Do greet man to man with a light handshake and sometime a kiss on the nose or both cheeks. Placing your right hand on your heart or chest after shaking hands is a show of great respect.Women greet with kisses or cheek to cheek touch. Man to woman greet with little or no touching

  • Do be tactful and less direct when communicating.Avoiding confontation and saving face is important

  • Do allow personal space especially with the opposite sex

  • Do have direct eye contact when talking except with an elder as a sign of respect

  • Do expect the custom for submissiveness in local women

  • Do dress formal, conservative and smart

  • Do expect to engage in small talk at meetings, frequent interuptions and cancellations are common

  • Do not expect punctuality to be taken very seriously. Time schedules are rarely kept

  • Do not give /receive objects with left hand, it is used for hygiene purpose

  • Do not point with your finger, use the whole hand

  • Do not cross legs at knee but the ankle

  • Do not point the toe or heel or any part of the foot at any person 

  • Do not show the sole of your foot or use the foot to move anything as it is the lowliest body part

  • Do not use pressure tactics in negotiating

  • Do not be impatient at meetings, decision-making is top-down and take time

  • Do not play music or eat outdoors during Ramadan

  • Do not smoke in public buildings
